The fetish of growth forecasts in modern societies is unbroken. The figures are awaited with excitement and great expectations. It’s a pity that, in retrospect, they almost never match the actual figures. What counts is only the future.
The Ökonomix card game was developed and designed by me according to the basic principle of a simple trick-taking game. The player takes the role of a country and has to predict the economic growth (stitches) for the coming game round. With a little luck and strategy, one can ensure the correct result. But beware – if you are wrong, you will be punished.
The cards are printed with illustrations in 4 colors. The red cards show communist thinkers, the blue, neoliberal thinkers, the green, predictions of end of the world that did not happen, the yellow cards, famous quotes from people who predicted the future wrong. Special feature: the jokers are bankers (always win) and the fools are politicians (always undercut).

The economic card game that will drive you to despair!
Players: 3-6, Duration: approx. 45 minutes, Age: 10+.
There are many different ways to make predictions. Whether with a crystal ball or mathematical models – many paths lead to an uncertain future. But economists in particular are often off the mark. „What do I care about the gossip I heard yesterday?“ This game is aimed at young economists who want to learn the great art of predicting economic growth! But beware – Every wrong prediction will be punished! Even if the direction was right, there is no forgetting here.
In this economic card game, the player must predict the exact number of growth for his economy in each economic round. (Economic Round = Each player in turn plays a card to the center of the table. These cards are one economic round. Experience points are awarded for a correct prediction. The player who has accumulated the most points at the end of the game wins and has moved up one rung on the ladder of success to become a wise economist.
One player is appointed as the economic sage of the round. The economic wise man receives the block of truth, enters the names and also conscientiously notes down the experience points gained for each during the game. After that, the Economic Wise Man shuffles the character cards and deals them out.
The character cards
There are four different colors: Capitalist (Blue) worse than any false prediction is that these economists really shape society. Communist (Red) were often wrong and generally failed. Doomsday theories (Green) were always off the mark – yet they still exist. You never know…wrong predictions(Yellow) a lot of what you say is wrong – you just have to be right once in a while.
The strongest card in each case is 13, the weakest card is 1.
The four banker cards are always trumps. They are higher than any 13.
The four politician cards are never trumps. They are lower than any 1.
Distributing the cards
In „Growth Growth“, players receive different numbers of cards in each economic round. In the first round, only one card is dealt to each player. Thus, only one economy can grow in this economic round. In the second economic round, two cards are dealt to everyone. In this round, two growth points are at stake. In the third round, three cards are dealt to everyone, then four cards, and so on, until all cards are in play in the final round. Cards that cannot be distributed to the players are placed in the center of the table as a face-down pile. After each economic round, the responsible task of distributing the character cards switches clockwise to the player on the left.
The trump card
After the character cards have been dealt, the top card from the deck is turned over and placed face up on top of the deck. This card determines the trump color for that particular economic round. (Trump = A trump is a card of the dream color. It wins against any card of a different suit). If the face-up card is a politician, then there is no trump suit for that round. If the face-up card is a banker, then the player who dealt the cards gets to choose a trump suit, but only after looking at his cards. In the last economic round, there is no trump because there is no pile from which a card can be revealed.
After each player has looked at his cards, he must predict how many growth points he will be able to score for his economy. (For the sake of simplicity and because economists are usually wrong not only in the comma area, you may only predict whole numbers, such as: 0, 1, 2, 3, …) One after the other, the players pass their predictions on to the economist. The left neighbor of the dealer starts. The predictions are written down on the block of truth. Before the first economic round, the economic sage should repeat the predictions again for everyone. Sometimes it can be helpful to lay out the amount of the predictions in the form of chips in front of the respective player. This makes it possible to see at any time during the game who still needs how many growth points.
The battle for growth
The left neighbor of the dealer plays the first card for the economic round. The other players follow clockwise. A played color must be served. If this is not possible, the player can discard a suit or play trumps. (serve = the player must play a card that has the same suit as the first card of the economic round). Note: Banker and politician cards may always be played, even if you could serve. Also, you do not have to serve a played suit with them.
It wins the economic round:
The first banker in an economic round
Or the highest card in the trump suit
Or the highest card, in the first suit played.
Special rights of bankers and politicians
If an economic round is opened with a banker, then the following players may discard any cards, including additional banker and politician cards. The growth point goes to the first banker in any case. Banker cards are trump, but do not have to be played as the first card of an economic round from the current trump suit. If an economic round is opened with a politician card, then any card may be played as the second card. Only the second card determines the suit that must be served. Politician cards lose every economic round. With one exception: If only politicians are played in an economic round, then the first politician card wins the economic round. This is only possible with three or four players.
The awarding of experience points
The player who was able to predict the number of growth points accurately receives 20 experience points plus 10 points for each economic round won. The player who guessed incorrectly loses 10 experience points for each growth point above or below his prediction.
There are 60 character cards in the game. Players play until all cards are dealt in the last economic round. For 6 participants this is the 10th economic round, for 5 participants this is the 12th economic round, for 4 participants this is the 15th economic round, and for 3 participants this is the 20th economic round. The last economic round is still settled. The winner is the player with the highest number of experience points.
